Lelystad Airport is undergoing major development. It is changing from an airport aimed at small air traffic to a holiday airport with attractive destinations in Europe and around the Mediterranean.
Lelystad Airport is building in three phases and the first holiday flights will depart in April 2019. In addition to holiday traffic, the airport also focuses on aircraft maintenance and business flights. The reason for this expansion is to maintain and strengthen Schiphol's economic function.

This development requires the necessary adjustments. The main ones are:
- The current runway will be extended and widened
- There will be an access road
- The A6 will get an extra exit
- The parking lot is being expanded step by step
- A new passenger terminal is being built
